Reese Witherspoon’s character (Melody) in the movie “Sweet Home Alabama ” told Andrew (Patrick Dempsey) “…see the truth of the matter is I gave my heart away a long time ago and I never really got it back”. Great story made short she realized she was still in love with Jake her childhood sweetheart who told her ” he was going to marry her when they were little”. When she asked him why he wanted to, he said “so I can kiss you anytime I want”.
Can you imagine being that smitten, that your heart skips past the formalities and promises forever way before life happens? As we live and love do we hold on to such desire and promise? Can we carry and keep such a promise simplistic and pure? Does knowing another’s heart keep us, prevent us, help us remember what’s real through life’s and loves happenstance?
If we keep with the story line of the movie, Jake and Melody did get married right out of high school but inexperience, immaturity and incidents caused them to split. Melody end up leaving and made a life for herself separate from Jake (Alabama ) but still dreamed of Jake and His promise. She was far away from him, the time they shared, with Andrew but connected to Jake. It took sometime, forgiveness and her eventually coming to the realization that life and love was optimal with him, for them to work out the kinks and surrender to their passion and renew their commitment.
Life happens, we get disappointed, begin to doubt the treasure of a promise. We veer off, pursue life and love elsewhere but there is always a longing, the memory of what was shared and promised before life happened. God somehow in His own way and timing gives us another chance to come to ourselves and senses. We can’t live or love without Him. He is the perfect fit, the only consideration, who our heart longs for and remembers.
His arms and heart is open to us even after and though we may have strayed away. While the world is trying to woo, work and wreck us His love remains constant. He like the character Jake Perry knew He would love us forever and made a binding commitment to be married to us…so He could kiss us anytime He wants. How awesome a promise is that?
Love overcomes distance, disappointment, decisions and dreams opposite It’s best interest. It intricately and intimately connects us to the will and work of God. You and I come around and have a choice to make may we agree and articulate the same thing God said and is yet saying “my heart belongs and is committed to you…I cannot give it to another… it does not belong exclusively to me no longer”. Home is where the heart is, Maybe not Alabama but it’s definitely sweet on you. Life and love is optimal with you…God is absolutely right about it…don’t you agree?~AntTBri
